The New Timeline Economics of Microsoft Delivery
Before I ever ran a technology project, I spent four years rotating through every department of one company, two or three months at a time. In every department I sat in, I watched people who knew their corner of the business cold think through how to do it better, and what struck me was never any single tool. It was what those people understood about their role and what was unlocked when you connected this knowledge. That is the lens I have run every program through since.
In the twenty years since, I have delivered ERP transformations across Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP, and today at Argano I work with organizations running those same transformations at every size. The platforms I work with today are not the ones I started on, but the key to success still comes down to the people.
The Clock Has Changed
What has changed around all of these people is the clock. Every buyer I talk to is working against a shorter timeline than the last one. What took eighteen months should take twelve. Twelve should take nine, nine should take six, and six should take three. That is where the market is going, and I do not think it goes back.
Part of what is driving that is the pace of change itself. Planning five years out has always been a bit like throwing a dart at a dartboard, but when agentic AI causes the ground to move every six months, it stops being planning at all. Buyers feel that, even when they cannot name it, and the patience for long programs is gone.
For years, this kind of work went the same way. You spent the first phase of each project on detailed analysis and requirements, then moved into design and build, and the executives who approved the money did not see a return until late in the process. Compress the timeline, and that way of working falls apart.
Velocity to value is my answer, and it is more than a tagline for me. Get something real in front of the business early, and every early win earns the trust to have a more honest conversation about where to go next.
But keep in mind that moving fast only works if your people are ready to move with you. In my experience, preparing them for the journey with proper training matters just as much as budgeting and planning.
How you actually accomplish this and when the pressure is on is the territory I want to cover in this newsletter.
Who Microsoft Momentum Is For, and Where It's Headed
Businesses placing a large bet on Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Fabric, or the agentic AI layer running on top of them are making that call on a shorter clock than they would like, with the industry shifting under them while they do it. If you are an executive deciding where the next investment goes across the Microsoft stack, a leader already mid-transformation and feeling the pressure, or a partner peer running frontier delivery who knows exactly what I mean, you are who I am writing for.
Each edition comes from what I am actually seeing in the field, not what the market says is happening. These are the calls that decide whether a program holds together, from someone who has had to make them. Wherever you are on your transformation journey, my job is to meet you there.
In the next edition, I will lay out 8.4.2. It is how I visualize success on a program, and I have not needed to change it in twenty years. Two of the factors are the ones most organizations quietly underfund, right when a compressed timeline can least afford it, and I will make the case for why cutting them usually stretches the timeline back out.
From there, what readiness really looks like inside a workforce, because people are scared about AI at every level right now, and a go-live only works when they are genuinely ready for it. And underneath all of it, your data, because agentic AI is only as good as what it runs on, and knowing whether it is right still comes down to people.
The platforms will keep changing, but what it takes to build momentum with Microsoft will not. I hope you will follow along as we unpack this together.
